Motor Trend Classic magazine for the Fall 2010 issue features a "Loving Look Back" drive of my '73 Vega GT, a '72 Pinto Runabout and a '71 Gremlin X:

My Vega was petitioned for the retrospective comparison in April 2010. The Pinto & Gremlin were then searched for close by on the east coast, and The University of Massachusetts was chosen as the photo-shoot site for its 70's building architecture. The meet-up took place June 12, 2010. Frank Markus, Technical Director of Motor Trend wrote of the Vega: "After a few gentle miles, I begin to understand how this car won its awards and comparison tests."

He closes the article agreeing with MT's initial assessment of the Vega and how it fared compared to its domestic competition; he wrote- "Chevrolet…

After eight years of exposure to daily morning moisture, rain and eight northeast winters on Long Island, my 1971 Vega has no rust...not even a spot, anywhere! I had decided after paying storage the first year, it would have to be parked outside (covered) - a huge savings that has amounted to $14k (200. per mo) over a seven-year period.

The Vega had been warehouse stored in Alabama nearly thirty years through 2002 by the previous owner. I don't possess that luxury, only a 1-car garage. Now granted, I did not expose it to salt and mud, and it is undercoated, but I've come to the conclusion if these cars are not exposed to the worst conditions, they will not rust any faster than any other car. My theory explains why only thousands of s…
